Understanding Your NDIS Plan: Core, Capacity Building & Capital Explained
When your NDIS plan arrives, the budgets and categories can be overwhelming. Understanding how your funding is structured helps you use it well and reach your goals faster. Here is what each part of your plan means.
The three NDIS budget types
Core Supports
Core Supports help with everyday activities and your disability-related needs. This is usually the most flexible budget and covers things like personal care, household tasks, transport and community participation.
Capacity Building Supports
Capacity Building helps you build skills and independence over time — such as developing life skills, improving health and wellbeing, or working toward employment and study goals. These funds are allocated to specific categories.
Capital Supports
Capital Supports cover higher-cost items like assistive technology, equipment or home modifications. This budget can only be used for its stated purpose.
Flexible vs stated budgets
Core Supports are generally flexible, meaning you can move funding between categories. Capacity Building and Capital budgets are usually “stated” — they must be spent on what the plan specifies. Knowing the difference helps you avoid surprises.
How to make your plan go further
- Map your goals to the right budget category before you start spending.
- Choose providers who help you plan, not just deliver hours.
- Review your spending regularly so funds last the full plan period.
