Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs Agency-Managed: Which NDIS Option Is Right for You?

NDIS Resources2 min read

How you manage your NDIS funding affects how much choice and control you have — and how much admin you take on. There are three options, and you can even combine them. Here is how each one works.

The three ways to manage your NDIS funding

Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)

The NDIA pays your providers directly. It is the simplest option with no paperwork for you, but you can only use registered NDIS providers.

Plan-managed

A plan manager pays your invoices and tracks your budget for you. You get more choice of providers (registered and non-registered) without the admin. The plan management fee is funded separately and does not come out of your other budgets.

Self-managed

You manage your own funding, pay providers and keep records. This gives you the most flexibility and control, including the ability to negotiate rates, but it comes with more responsibility.

Pros and cons at a glance

  • Agency-managed — easiest; registered providers only.
  • Plan-managed — flexibility with little admin; a great middle ground for many families.
  • Self-managed — maximum control; more bookkeeping and responsibility.

Which is right for you?

There is no single right answer — it depends on how much control you want and how much admin you are comfortable with. Many participants start agency- or plan-managed and move to self-managed as they gain confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Does plan management cost me money?

No. Plan management is funded separately in your NDIS plan and does not reduce your other support budgets.

Can I use non-registered providers?

Yes, if you are plan-managed or self-managed. Agency-managed participants must use registered providers.

Can I change how my plan is managed?

Yes. You can request a change to your plan management at a plan review or by contacting the NDIA.
